16th century detailed copperplate engraving of a biblical scene by the well known Dutch master Lucas van Leyden. In the background we see Christ on the cross on the mountain Golgotha. In the foreground we see people from all walks of life, poor and rich, discussing the spectacle in the background. Similar prints by Lucas van Leyden from the 16th century with this biblical scene can be found in public collections like the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The first state of 'Golgotha' dates from 1517. This is a print from the third state, printed by Wartius Petri in Antwerp in 1560. The paper shows a Crescent watermark.
The Dutch master Lucas van Leyden (Leiden 1489? - Leiden 1533) worked as a painter, engraver and designer of woodcuts and stained glass. His graphical work is extensive and shows influences of Dürer and Raimondi. A large altarpiece by his hand with the depiction of 'The Last Judgement' survived the iconoclastic outbreak and is on display in the Lakenhal Museum in Leiden.
